Carcassonne is a medieval walled town situated on the right bank of the River Aude and is featured on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

Used recently to film 'Robin Hood' - 'Prince of Thieves' it is a truely inspiring Citie, unusaully there are no restrictions on access, you can wonder around the outer walls exploring the many nooks and crannies once used for defending the great city.

Within the interior walled area there are many fine resturants, shops and cafes in which to while away an afternoon.

The mediaeval walled town of Carcassonne is unusual for its double ring of walls 3 km long, including 52 towers. The first, or external, wall was built during the reign of Louis IX when the town was part of the royal estates, becoming the seat of the Senelschalsy. During that same period, earthworks were carried out in the jousting grounds (the space between the two sets of walls) and the Gallo-Roman, or inner, wall was strengthened. Much of the Gallo-Roman wall is still clearly visible today. It consists of small, regular bonding with brick stringing.
The remainder of the inner wall dates from the reign of Philip the Fair (13th century).

Carcassonne also boasts the Canal-du-Midi, a waterway stretching from Marseillan to Toulouse, it is 240 km long and passes through fantastic scenary en route, canal boats are available for hire at the major towns on the waterway.
