A city in the Finistère département in Brittany in northwestern France, great to visit in your hire car, Brest is an important harbour and French military port. The main metropolitain area of Western Brittany, it is the largest city in Finistère.
The history of the city has always been linked to the sea, and the Académie de marine was founded there in 1752.

Brest is well known for the Pont de Recouvrance, a huge drawbridge that towers 64 metres high, the rue de Siam and the military arsenal.
The rue de Siam is the main avenue, sporting boutiques, cafés, and restaurants. Starting at the Mayors in Place de la Liberté and ending at the harbour, it is the perfect afternoon out if you feel like shopping.
In Recouvrance, the west bank of the town, an authentic 17th century street named Saint-Malo street remains. Most of the other authentic old architecture in Brest was destroyed during the second world war, but a few beautiful snippets of its past are still found.
However, get in your hire car and leave the centre of Brest to see some impressive landscapes a few kilometres out, including sandy beaches, grottos and granite cliffs. Windsurfing, fishing, yachting and sunbathing are the main activites enjoyed by the locals.

The city holds an annual short Film Festival named " Festival Européen du Film Court de Brest", and during August every thursday a small music and theatrical festival is held on the harbour. With a party atmosphere, music, food and drink, young and more mature people alike will have a great time.

Inside the city, tramway lines have just been built, and will be a huge relief for travelling around the centre of this area, which can sometimes prove demanding for some people because of its dramatic, hilly landscape.
